NMC PROA program to begin in SY 2016
The Northern Marianas College will begin implementing Project PROA, or Promotion and Retention Opportunities for Advancement, in school year 2016.
Project PROA is part of a $269,023 grant awarded earlier this year by the Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving Institutions Program. It is the first budget installment of the five-year $1.4- million grant program.
According to the grant proposal, the goal is to improve and expand the capacity of NMC to increase the number and proportion of high-need Chamorro and Carolinian students who are academically prepared to attend and graduate from NMC on time.
Last year, the college reported that 90 percent of incoming NMC students were at remedial level. The PROA program seeks to address this issue for students of Chamorro and Carolinian descent.
Those eligible for the program must have a need for academic support in order to successfully pursue a degree at NMC, are a low-income individual based upon federal guidelines, are below their grade level equivalency in reading and math of at least below two grade levels, at risk of failing, or an individual with a disability that fits the criteria.
The proposed project aims to increase academic advancement in three phases for a five-year grant period.
The Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving Institutions Program awards a maximum grant of $300,000 per year for five years for a total award of $1.5 million. The average award ranges from $200,000 to $300,000 per year.
