NMC Palau club asks community to donate water
The Northern Marianas College’s Palauan Club is asking the community to donate cases of water that would be sent to their home country, which is currently experiencing a shortage of drinking water due to extensive drought.
Republic of Palau President Tommy Remengasau Jr. has already declared a state of emergency because of the water crisis with the government also scheduling water service to the more than 20,000 residents living and working on the island nation.
NMC-PC held a water donation drive last Friday at the Kilili Pavilion and will have two more, on May 6 and May 14, before they ship the cases of drinking water to Palau, said club president Dominic Hideo.
“We are targeting to get a minimum of 1,000 cases of bottled water, in any size. People have been coming and we expect more next Friday and on May 14. We also put up a Facebook page to further spread awareness of our country’s situation,” said Hideo.
He added that water service had been limited to two hours a day especially in Koror state that has a population of close to 12,000. The water service was increased to four hours, from 5am to 9am.
“A civic action team is also in Palau, using reverse osmosis to help solve the water shortage. Water supply is very limited especially in the other islands.”
Hideo said they could also pick up cases of water from people or groups that want to donate if they have problems in transporting it. Palauans studying at the University of Guam also held another water drive.
“Now, we’re looking for a way to send it to Palau after the last day. Hopefully, we could have it sent for free or get a discount.”
