NMC instructor completes PhD
A faculty member of Northern Marianas College, J. Marcelino González, has recently completed the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Monash University—a world-ranked institution and member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight, OR Go8.

Specializing in the theory and practice of translation, his doctoral thesis—titled Metaphor and Agency in the English-Spanish Translation of Texts In the Social Sciences (2014)—examines process- and product-oriented issues in cross-cultural academic writing with an emphasis on figurative language in political discourse, as well as on the translator’s role in localizing texts to meet the unique needs of new target markets. Drawing as well from his translation of Dr. Russell Crandall’s Gunboat Democracy (2006) his practice-led research also explores the collaborative-intervenient role of the translator, from project conception and copyrights to proposal submissions and publication.
González is an English and Spanish instructor in the Languages & Humanities Department, as well as a certified translator. Having taught in several countries before joining NMC in 2009, he is also the translator of Dr. Dawn Stinchcomb’s The Development of Literary Blackness in the Dominican Republic (2004). Currently, he is working on a grant proposal for the English translation of selected essays from Del español al chamorro(2009)—an edited volume exploring the centuries-long influence of the Spanish language on the evolution of modern Chamorro.
“I am pleased when one of our faculty chooses to pursue and earn a doctorate degree,” said NMC president Dr. Sharon Hart. “This degree stimulates a faculty member to garner even more knowledge of a specific discipline, which is most often transferred into the classroom. So not only does a faculty member benefit from earning this degree, so do the students.”
