Northern Marianas College recently hosted a visit by Dr. Carlos Crespo, director of the School of Community Health at Portland State University.  The visit was part of an annual site visit, which allows Crespo to connect the college’s BUILD EXITO team and scholars.

The BUILD EXITO program is an undergraduate research training program funded by the National Institute of Health that trains students doing research in biomedical, bioengineering, behavioral, clinical, health, and social topics.

“We are in the third year of our partnership with Portland State University,” said NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “Dr. Crespo’s visit underscores the importance of this partnership, which encourages students to pursue careers in scientific research and other STEM fields.”

The program involves a consortium of colleges and universities including Northern Marianas College, University of Guam, University of Hawaii, American Samoa Community College, University of Alaska, Portland State University, Oregon Health and Sciences University, Clackamas Community College, Portland Community College, Chemeketa Community College, and Clark College.

The goals of this program are to help engage scholars in finding solutions to today’s major health problems and to give them an opportunity to have hands-on, paid research experience. Participating scholars will have the opportunity to receive over $1,000 per month stipend, receive faculty and peer mentoring, and attend Portland State University to earn their bachelor of science degree.

The BUILD EXITO team at Northern Marianas College includes Charlotte Cepeda, Dr. Beylul Solomon, curriculum development and faculty mentor; Roland Merar, faculty mentor; Lorna Liban, faculty mentor; and Alexis Cabrera (peer mentor).

The BUILD EXITO scholars currently attending NMC are Russell Javan, Maria Dizon, and Jesse Deleon Guerrero. All three scholars will be transferring to PSU in the fall. Other NMC scholars who are currently attending PSU as part of the BUILD EXITO program are Beda Mundo, Marjoen Martin, and Dhale Posadas. NMC is currently in the process of selecting five additional scholars to take part in the program this year. Scholars will be told of their selection by April 12. (NMC)
