The Board of Regents of the Northern Marianas College has been urged to revise the two-year contracts of its staff to ensure job security.

Dr. John Griffin, the Senate Faculty president and honorary member of the board, told the board yesterday that besides this long-time concern, faculty members are also urging the board to implement a policy it adopted 22 years ago relating to the promotion of personnel.

Griffin said the two-year employment contract policy was established by the board in 1998, while the policy on promotions was adopted in 1989 but was never enforced.

The existing two-year employment contract of NMC personnel stipulates that it can be terminated or not renewed without cause. Griffin appealed for an open-contract that can only be terminated with cause.

NMC has 28 instructors, 46 non-instructional instructors, and 39 part-time instructors. Board chair Juan Lizama expressed support for the proposed changes in the personnel employment contract, citing this has been on the personnel committee’s agenda.

Also yesterday, the board welcomed the newly elected president of the Associated Students of NMC, Lawrence Camacho, who will serve as an honorary member of the board.
