The Northern Marianas Athletics is thankful for the support given by the community that helped them secure the hosting rights for the 2018 Oceania Micronesia Regional Championships.

Saipan was unanimously awarded the rights to host the biennial regional tournament for Micronesian islands during the Oceania Athletics Association Congress in Fiji set from June 23 to 25 last year.

NMA president Ramon A. Tebuteb said the combined efforts of the government and private sector brought the regional competition to Saipan.

“The CNMI was able to secure the hosting of this prestigious event via the support and commitment from all of our officials. From the Hon. Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and Lt. Gov. Victor B. Hocog to our [Northern Marianas Sports Association] president Michael White, and one of our strongest sports family members, Jerry Tan of TanHoldings.”

Tebuteb added OAA would help fund the local organizing committee in hosting the OMRC.

“OAA will partially fund this event. Our LOC is task to facilitate the preparation, from the venue to volunteers, and health and safety of everyone at this meet. The NMA is committed to this event,” the NMA head said.

The former lawmaker said events like OMRC help them spark interest in the multi-event sports of athletics as they continue to find talents through NMA-organized events.

“We have national level [CNMI-wide] events that NMA provide annually for our community. First is the [Public School System] McDonald’s All Schools Championships followed by our annual national championships after the schools meet,” Tebuteb said.

“NMA also conducts many running events and road races, including the All Schools Cross Country Championships every last quarter of the year or from September to November.”
