The Northern Marianas Athletics has moved the date of the 34th Annual Christmas Island Relay from Dec. 26 to Dec. 19.

NMA official and athletics coach Elias Rangamar said the event, which is usually held on a Saturday after Christmas, is much closer to the 25th this year unlike in the previous years.

“The original schedule was every Saturday after Christmas but it’s a tight schedule this year. Unlike before, we usually hold it two or three days after Christmas,” said Rangamar yesterday.

The race starts at 6am with the first runner of each of the five-member teams beginning the run toward the finish line at the Last Command Post from the Pacific Island Club’s south parking lot. Each member will then alternately run one mile (1.6 kilometers) until they complete the half marathon distance (13.7 miles or 22k). Open and youth mixed teams, and solo are the categories.

Teams in the open division must have at least one U16 member and a female runner or one who is 40 or older. The youth mixed team must have at least one female or one U12 runner.

The entry fee is $25 per team or $5 for each member, while $10 for the solo runners, male or female.

NMA secretary general Robin Sapong said, in a Facebook post, that the Island Relay is one of the association’s events that promote a healthy lifestyle.

“This is just one of the events the NMA hosts in its continued efforts to promote physical fitness, health and wellness, and fight obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other medical conditions that plague the people of the CNMI,” added Sapong.
