Midori Nishida  Eighteen-year-old Midori Nishida is this year’s valedictorian for the Calvary Christian Academy, which held its graduation ceremony at the school auditorium last Friday.

Nishida is the older of two children of Tomohiko and Victoria Nishida.

A member of the prestigious National Society of High School Scholars, the younger Nishida won third place in the 28th Annual Attorney General’s Cup early this month and was awarded first place for two years in a row in the “Voice of Democracy” essay and speech writing competition of the Veterans of Foreign War.

For three consecutive years, Nishida represented the CNMI in the National Forensic League competition in the U.S., including this year’s contest held in Indiana. She was also the recipient of the Junior Statesmen of America’s scholarship at Stanford University last year.

Besides her studies, Nishida also does volunteer work as assistant coach for the National Junior Forensic League and Primary Grade Forensic Competition, as well as the American Red Cross swimming lessons for younger children under Tsunami Saipan Swim Club.

“Being the class valedictorian is one of my accomplishments that I am proud of,” said Nishida, who has consistently excelled in her academics. “Now that it’s all done, I am glad that I didn’t give up, and I’m proud of my high school life.”

She describes her family as “my biggest fans and supporters.”

Nishida said her love for science prompted her to take a pre-medicine course in Waseda University in Japan and eventually specialize in pediatrics.

“I chose Waseda University in Japan because it gives me an opportunity to live and learn about my culture and heritage,” she told Saipan Tribune.

Nishida encouraged students aspiring to be at the top of their class to be diligent and passionate about what they do. “Don’t let your circumstances keep you from achieving success. Instead, let them be a guide and stepping stone to reaching your best,” she added.
