The workshop, held at the CNMI Archives, Northern Marianas College, was facilitated by University of Guam history professor Dr. Michael Clement Jr.

During the course of the workshop, Clement helped participants identify historically significant topics, develop research proposals, navigate the local archives, and conduct oral history. He also introduced participants to the technical aspects of writing a research paper.

On the final day of the workshop, participants presented their papers and received feedback from Clement and from their peers. Papers covered a variety of topics ranging from ancient times to events of the post-World War II era.

Clement said he was very pleased with the results of the workshop. “We had some amazing presentations. I was impressed with the diversity of projects and the tremendous amount of work participants put into their research.”

Several of the papers will be presented at the upcoming 3rd Marianas History Conference to be held on Saipan on Sept. 4-6.

This is the second history research workshop sponsored by the Humanities Council. The first was held in 2013 under the direction of University of Guam professor Dr. Anne Hattori.

These workshops are a part of the council’s efforts to increase local participation in history and historical research.

The council invites the public to learn more about local history at the upcoming 3rd Marianas History Conference in September. (NMI Humanities Council)
