The Saipan Mayor’s Office hopes to complete the construction of its new animal shelter by the end of 2018.

The mayor’s office has already started soliciting bids for the construction of the new kennel that would be about 5,550 square feet.

The original kennel in Lower Base was destroyed in 2015 as a result of Typhoon Soudelor and the building was condemned after the typhoon.

Since then, the Dog Control Program has been housing stray dogs in a temporary shelter in As Perdido.

After Soudelor, the mayor’s office received a $361,406.38 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to build a new animal shelter.

Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang’s special assistant, Henry Hofschneider, said a complete design and architectural plan is required to be ready for review by Apatang before bids could be solicited.

The completion of the design and architectural plan took a little over three months, as estimated, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office was able to hold a pre-bid conference on Feb. 22, which has seven potential bidders.

According to information obtained from the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the bid proposals must be in on or before March 7.

Apatang hopes the new kennel will be built by the end of 2018.

The new shelter will be built on a portion of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources’ As Perdido property and will be approximately 5,550 square feet, nearly the same size as the old shelter that was destroyed.
