Nelvis tops first-ever 10-ball tourney
Mark Brian Nelvis defeated Eugene Borja in the finals to win the first-ever 10-Ball Billiards Tournament held last Saturday at Joe’s Bar.
A total of nine players joined the first night of the tourney with Nelvis taking out Luis Fajardo, 2-0, in the first round before prevailing over Juancho Mendoza, 2-1, in the quarterfinals.
He barged into the finals after oustlasting Taylor Watanabe, 2-0, in the semifinals to arrange the finals tiff against Borja.
Borja, meanwhile, got the better of Chester Cuento, 2-1, and Victor Hocog, 2-1, to advance to the finals opposite Nelvis.
In the finals, Nelvis won the first game after Borja missed on the 8-ball. Borja won the second game after Brian misfired on the 7-ball.
Nelvis then captured the championship in the third game after pocketing the first eight balls before playing a safety shot on the 9-ball.
Borja missed a tough cut shot on the 9-ball, giving the table back to Nelvis, proceeded to run the last two balls-9-ball and 10-ball-giving him the distinction title of being the first-ever 10-ball champion.
He earned $50 plus a case of Miller Lite beer and a Miller Lite T-shirt. Borja also won cash and 12-pack of Miller Lite, while third place Cuento also won cash and a 12-pack of Miller Lite.
Joe’s Bar is inviting Saipan’s best pool players to join the first 10-Ball Billiards Tournament sponsored by Miller Lite.
The double-elimination tournament is held every Saturday starting 9pm. A handicap system based on the shooting skill of the player is used. Entrance fee is $10. Joe’s Bar is located in front of Fiesta Resort Saipan. (Saipan Tribune)
