There are nearly 100 individuals who want to be elected to at least 47 CNMI government seats—from municipal council members to the attorney general and the governor’s post.

Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Robert A. Guerrero said last night that as of the 6pm deadline, 98 individuals have filed their candidacies for the Nov. 4 general elections.

Only a few individuals waited for the last day to file their candidacies yesterday, including Sen. Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota), who filed his candidacy on Rota. Manglona marks his 26th year at the Senate, whom he led as president for multiple terms.

Guerrero said while there were 98 who filed their candidacies, the election board still has to certify these candidacies before they become official candidates for the November race.

The 47 seats up for grabs in the general elections include those for governor/lieutenant governor, delegate, attorney general, 20 House of Representatives seats, six Senate seats, four mayors, nine municipal council members, and two Board of Education members, along with one justice and two judges who are up for retention, Guerrero said.

He said there were individuals who filed their candidacies on Rota and Tinian yesterday.

The Election Commission is also reminding CNMI residents that are U.S. citizens and who would like to register to vote for the Nov. 4 general elections that the last day to register is Sept. 5.
