NCD Community Forum on Rota tomorrow
The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s Division of Public Health would like to inform the Rota community that a forum on non-communicable diseases will be held tomorrow, April 19, 2012, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Office of the Mayor of Rota’s Conference Room.
The forum, like those recently held on the islands of Saipan and Tinian, will touch on issues of non-communicable diseases and associated risk factors that are the most common causes of disability and death of our people. This epidemic of NCDs is directly linked to four risk factors-poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol abuse. NCDs are lifestyle related, and for the most part, preventable.
The Division of Public Health recognizes that NCDs are not only an epidemic, but a true public health emergency. In spite of our efforts to date, this epidemic has steadily become worse.
The most effective response to NCD’s will come from the community, and that a “whole of society” approach is needed. For this reason, the Rota community is urged to attend the community forum, which will allow for open discussion and sharing of ideas on how to effectively combat NCDs on the islands.
The forum is open to the public and everyone is called upon to help fight against NCDs in the CNMI. For more information, contact the Division of Public Health at telephone number 236-8703, 285-3735 or via email at chcpublichealth@gmail.com. Public comments and recommendations are also welcomed by emailing the address above. (PR)
