MYPros meets with award-winning photojournalist

Nancy Borowick is a humanitarian and photojournalist whose series of photos depicting her mother and father battling stage four cancers was nominated by The New York Times for a Pulitzer Prize, one of the highest awards for journalism. The project name was originally Cancer Family, Ongoing, but was recently made into a book, The Family Imprint, with help from a very successful Kickstarter campaign.

A regular contributor to The New York Times, her work has also been showcased on CNN, National Geographic and The Washington Post. Her work has been recognized many times over the past six years with some important highlights. In 2014, Borowick won the Eddie Adams Workshop Award for Innovation in Visual Storytelling as well as one of the Best ASMP featured photographers and in 2015, she won the National Geographic + Visura contest.

Graduating with a degree in Anthropology and Photography from Union College in New York, Borowick has focused her work on telling stories of illness and personal relationships with her camera. Her parents, Laurel and Howie, were married 34 years before both died within one year of each other. Her father suffered from pancreatic cancer while her mother battled breast cancer for over 17 years.

By capturing her parents’ most intimate moments, Borowick was able to illustrate true love despite illness and express the struggle that many families face when a loved one gets sick. “One can only truly understand and appreciate life when faced with one’s own mortality. Nobody wants to talk about death, but it is one of the only things that is certain in life, so an awareness of this finitude allowed my family to take advantage of the time they had left together,” she said in her website.

In addition, Borowick works and contributes to many non-profit projects, including Water for Triumph, Ghana on Tap, Touch A Life Foundation to End Child Slavery, Great Oaks Foundation, and The Solitude of Nadya.

Borowick will be the guest speaker for the MyPros Membership Meet on Jan. 25 at Aqua Resort’s poolside.
