A seminal moment in the Oscar-winning musical, Sound of Music, shows the character of Julie Andrews, Maria, singing My Favorite Things to explain to the von Trapp children that she always thinks of her favorite things whenever she is unhappy. Sounds facile but is actually an effective coping mechanism. We all want to create a home or office filled with all of the things we love and cherish. But no matter how you love many things in your home, there is always that one thing that will always make you sigh, feel good, and be positive about. Saipan Tribune asked around: Which item in your home do you really like? The responses we got were quite insightful.

Sandy Weaver: “I would have to say my absolute favorite piece of art or decor would definitely be my huge handcarved turtle that sits on a root stand. I purchased this gem years ago in Ubud, Bali and have learned from all the frequent trips in the past that if you see something you like, it is wise to purchase it as it may be hard to find again later. Growing up on Saipan, I’ve always been fond of turtles as they symbolize wisdom and good luck and, for some, it’s a guardian spirit. This piece of art is about 3 feet by 4 feet and around 4 feet tall made of teak wood.”

Trey Dunn: “My favorite piece of decor in our house is our 150-gallon saltwater fish aquarium. I am a fish biologist and really enjoy keeping fish in our home. The fish are native to the CNMI and provide a great discussion topic for guests. I have recently really enjoyed my children’s interest in the fish as it makes for a great place for them to learn about the environment as well as a daily chore.”

Maxine Lazslo: “The item in my home that gives me most joy is my painting of a flame tree. I purchased it this year at Flame Tree Arts Festival from painter Irineo David. I love how our island is portrayed in such vibrant colors, with Managaha in the background. The Flame Tree Art Festival is also my favorite week of the entire year, so whenever I see the piece, I’m reminded of all the artists and small business owners who share their passions for the rest of us to enjoy.”

Rep. Sheila Babauta: “I found this beautiful chair being used by our procurement officer during my first few weeks in office. It was worn out, with many holes and covered in an old, red, leather-like fabric that needed much love and attention. Many laughed and actually thought I was crazy for even wanting it, but I saw its potential and beauty. This item is more than just a chair to me, it represents the long hours of hard work, meaningful meetings with community members, and life=changing decisions that have taken place in the Legislature. I wish I knew the list of representatives who sat in this very seat who had the same responsibilities, felt the same pressure and passion for our Marianas. …This historic chair serves as a beautiful reminder of the service and sacrifice of our public servants, inspiring me to do my best and contribute to a better CNMI.”

Sheryl Ann Clark: “My favorite piece of decor in our home is a handpainted mermaid on driftwood. While I might be a little partial to the artist (my fiancé), it’s the love that went into the painting and taking something old and weathered and giving it new life that makes it truly special. It is also the piece that made our house here feel like a home since it was a piece of the Florida Keys we got to bring with us.”
