For its work promoting the Marianas, the Marianas Visitors Authority garnered two recognitions at the 2019 International Tourism Communication Awards on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Bo’ao, Hainan Province, China.

MVA received awards for Festival Event of the Year for the 2019 Saipan Marathon and Tourism Image of the Year for the new social media image Mari and Ana.

“The International Tourism Communication Award, cofounded by Communication University of China and Global Tourism Communication Creative Alliance, is a professional award recognizing promotional results of cultural tourism, tourism activities and related marketing activities, and the MVA is honored to have received two recognitions for our work this year,” said MVA managing director Priscilla M. Iakopo. “We are grateful for the creative marketing being initiated by our China office, and we expect more awareness of our annual signature event Saipan Marathon and the brand Marianas through these two awards.”

The Festival Event of the Year award is presented to iconic tourism events held in domestic and outbound destinations with outstanding marketing results. To promote the event, the MVA carried out cross-platform, cross-brand and cross-field integrated promotions. The number of runners from China has increased for three consecutive years, setting a new record with nearly 300 participants this year and becoming the biggest outbound source market for the event.

The Tourism Image of the Year award is presented to iconic new public images launched by tourism organizations, including slogans, logos, mascots, etc. The characters Mari and Ana, a boy and girl with Chamorro and Carolinian attire, were launched in the Chinese market to enhance the brand impression and peculiarity of the Marianas, as well as to promoting the indigenous cultures of the destination. The MVA developed well-received WeChat emojis and collaterals based on the characters. (MVA)
