MVA board yet to adopt tourism master plan

The Marianas Visitors Authority board has yet to take any action on the final draft of the CNMI Tourism Master Plan for 2012 to 2016.
During yesterday’s regular meeting, board chair Marian Aldan-Pierce recommended that the board have a one-day work session to sit down and go through the document.
The board agreed to have the work session within the month before it formally adopts the 100-page master plan prepared by Management Analysis Inc. and funded by the Office of the Insular Affairs last year.
Aldan-Pierce noted that the work session will be in time for the next board meeting slated for June 20.
The master plan contains extensive research regarding destination and markets, the CNMI’s tourism history, needed tourism projects, and other important recommendations for development over the next five years.
MVA managing director Perry Tenorio pointed out that the master plan is an “independent study” and has two components: the “public” component, which is the plan itself, and the “industry side,” which gives more details on the surveys conducted and used in the plan.
The document, Tenorio said, is not only limited to the role of MVA but also the responsibilities of both the public and private sectors in the development of the Commonwealth’s tourism industry.
The master plan was endorsed to then acting governor Eloy S. Inos on March 15. Copies of the document were also provided to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Cabinet members.
