MVA: Bids now sought for Beach Road Pathway relighting project
Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Perry Tenorio said they are moving forward with reenergizing the lights along the Beach Road Pathway and an invitation for bids is now with the Department of Public Works.
There are currently no lights that function along the Beach Road Pathway. MVA said many of the copper wires have been stripped by thieves.
Tenorio told lawmakers that improving the lighting in the pathway is one of the many destination enhancement projects that the office is pushing to improve the island’s image for tourists.
“As of now, an IFB is in the process and it is with DPW,” Tenorio said at a recent hearing on MVA’s budget at the Legislature.
SPDA Engineering, which is in charge of pushing the project forward, gave MVA updates at their board meeting in February 2015. It said an inventory was done for light fixtures from Kilili Beach/Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium to the American Memorial Park, Paseo de Marianas, and Bank of Saipan areas.
“These are one of the big projects that MVA is moving forward with and will give more updates after the IFB process moves forward and ground work starts,” Tenorio said.
MVA wants the project done in possibly six months, including the assessment, bidding, and construction of new path lights.
It was earlier reported that a master electrician needs to be hired to test if some of the lighting fixtures can still be salvaged.
First phase would be an assessment of the pathway to determine what types of lights would be necessary and if there are any breaks in the conduits.
This project would also require maintenance and further involvement of MVA. Tenorio earlier asked lawmakers at a budget hearing that MVA needs $1.8 million to hire more staff for the projects it’s undertaking.
Two of the MVA’s large destination enhancement projects is the complete renovation of Banzai Cliff and the Flower Island Project that seeks to rebrand the CNMI as a “Flower Island.”
