MTEC visits Saipan Southern High, Tinian

The Marianas Tourism Education Council took its message on the importance of tourism to Saipan Southern High, Tinian Jr./Sr. High, and Tinian Elementary this month.
MTEC chairman Vicky Benavente and a supporting team from the Marianas Visitors Authority spoke to three classes of students simultaneously on Feb. 5, 2014.
“The presentation at Saipan Southern was a great opportunity to actively engage the students on tourism-related topics specific to their age group,” said Benavente. “Not only did we share information about the industry, but we also emphasized job opportunities and gave the students a chance to share their own knowledge of the industry and our source markets.”
On Feb. 14, the council visited the two schools in Tinian, addressing about 50 students at Tinian Jr./Sr. High, where about one-third of the students indicated they planned to join the military after graduation. At Tinian Elementary, about 100 students sat in on MTEC’s presentation.
“We appreciate the warm welcome we received, including some Valentine’s Day sweets from Tinian Jr./Sr. High’s active MY WAVE (Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically) Club, who were having a fundraiser that day,” said Benavente. “At the elementary school, the students were very enthusiastic to share their ideas about what makes Tinian a nice place to visit and what activities they would recommend to a visitor…everything from visiting the latte stones and swimming at Taga Beach to eating local food.”
MTEC is a non-profit organization aimed at educating the public on the tourism industry and its importance to the community. (MTEC)
