MTEC sends Tiglao to Guam Tourism Summit

For winning this year’s school essay contest sponsored by the Marianas Tourism Education Council, 10th grader Mary Grace Tiglao of Marianas High School attended the Guam Tourism Summit on Jan. 31, 2014.
Tiglao was selected for having the best high school entry on the theme “Tourism is Everybody’s Business, 24/7 in the 670.” She joined 300 middle and high school students at Father Duenas School Phoenix Center in exploring the summit’s theme “My History is Guam’s History…My Future is Guam’s Future.”
“We must maintain and preserve our islands’ beauty and culture,” said Tiglao in her report to MTEC following the summit. “We must always try to give our visitors an unforgettable experience…For example, attractions and places to dine with good food, service, and people…Museums are also great places for visitors and locals alike to learn more about the history and culture of their area.”
The summit featured a mini-tour of exhibits on Guam’s cultural and history, including a slideshow, presentations about the importance of tourism, inspirational speakers who spoke of Guam’s history and their personal stories. Participants also learned Chamorro dance, and chants and poetry were presented.
“When people visit our island, we ought to give them a taste of our culture and showcase to them the many aspects of it unforgettable experience…so that we can educate other people about [our] culture,” Tiglao added.
Tiglao also had the opportunity to meet Heidi Ballendorf, executive director of Guam’s Tourism Education Council. She was accompanied by MTEC chairman Vicky Benavente, MTEC board member Larry Lee, and her parents. (MTEC)
