Adding to its goal of reaching every public school on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota with the message “Tourism is Everybody’s Business,” the Marianas Tourism Education Council is also resuming educational presentations to private schools.
On Nov. 17, 2015, MTEC presented to grades 5-8 at Grace Christian Academy at the invitation of principal Beth Nunez. The presentation covered tourism statistics and benefits, marketing and signature events by the Marianas Visitors Authority, the importance of environmental conservation, and careers in the industry.
“We’ve had a very successful last few years of getting the message out to public school students on how tourism works and its importance to our community. We can see the young people growing in their understanding,” said MTEC chair Vicky Benavente. “This year we are also entertaining private schools, upon request, and we’re pleased to have the resources to do so, thanks in part, to the generous support of the Hotel Association of the Northern Marianas and MVA members.”
MTEC and the Marianas Visitors Authority also presented at San Antonio Middle School on Nov 19, 2015. Best Sunshine International director of Corporate Social Responsibility Geri Dela Cruz shared about the benefits and opportunities of golf tourism. San Antonio Middle School has an active MY WAVE Club engaging in tourism-related activities.
“We’d like to see every school with a MY WAVE Club,” said Benavente. “Any school wishing to start a club or actively engaged in supporting tourism can contact us about financial incentives available.”
