MTEC readies for school outreach

The Marianas Tourism Education Council will begin its annual fall outreach next month, taking its message of the importance of tourism to hundreds of students at public elementary schools, with plans to continue outreach to junior and senior high schools in the spring.

“The MTEC education outreach will focus on the contribution of tourism to the islands’ economic wellbeing,” said MTEC chair Vicky Benavente. “The challenge we now face is, in what way do we present this information to the students, many of whom may not have electricity or potable water in their homes due to the impact of Typhoon Soudelor. I understand these are difficult circumstances, but I encourage all businesses to demonstrate leadership and responsibility by joining the efforts of MTEC—directly or indirectly—and assist in strengthening the education outreach in all NMI schools.”

Last year MTEC visited 18 schools on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota in partnership with the Marianas Visitors Authority.

“We are again looking forward to working with MTEC on sharing the very important message that ‘Tourism is Everybody’s Business,’” said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “Especially as our island rebuilds following Typhoon Soudelor, we can all see the economic importance of supporting tourism and working to restore and enhance our islands natural beauty.”
