Mt. Carmel set for ‘Little Mermaid Jr.’
Mount Carmel School Theatre Club is all set for its two-day special show of The Little Mermaid Jr., slated for today and tomorrow at the school’s stage.
The The Little Mermaid Jr. is a 60-minute musical based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 animated Disney film. This will be MCS Theatre Club’s first production to feature the singing, dancing, and acting talents of students from first to 12th grade.
Junior student Aysia Santos, who is the show’s director, said that leading the production was difficult but rewarding.
“It was hard transitioning from being the stage manager to being the director, but I had a good stage manager in Jackie Doctor, so it was easier. I’m glad that everyone came together to bring this show and my vision to life. It’s going to be a great show!” said Santos.
MCS president and Theatre Club adviser Galvin Deleon Guerrero shares Santos enthusiasm.
“This is a great show for the whole family. It has all the original songs from the movie that everyone can probably sing by heart, plus three new songs added just for the Broadway musical version,” he said.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch, and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.
Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story, the show’s creative credits include music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and book by Doug Wright, with music adapted and arranged by David Weinstein.
The Little Mermaid Jr. is presented via a special arrangement with all authorized materials supplied by Music Theatre International.
Admission to the show is $10 for preferred seating and $5 for general seating. Tickets are available at the school’s Business Office or at the door. The show runs tonight and tomorrow night at Mount Carmel School with doors opening at 6:30pm each night.
The Theatre Club is staging the show on the school’s historic stage where the CNMI Covenant and Constitution were signed. It will be dedicating a portion of ticket proceeds to the “Save the Stage” campaign. (Moneth G. Deposa)
