More prizes for beer festival cookoff

Saturday’s Chun Ji BBQ Short Ribs Cookoff at the 2nd Annual Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival just got a lot juicier, with more prizes for the winners.

The cookoff at Garapan Fishing Base at 5pm will challenge six teams of one or two participants to prepare on site the best tasting and best plated short ribs, served with two side dishes.

First place will win $50 worth of festival tokens and two nights stay for four people and an additional pool pass for two at Mango Resort. Second place will win $40 worth of festival tokens and one night stay for four people and an additional pool pass for two at Mango Resort, and a beach chair and umbrella from IT&E. Third place will win $30 of festival tokens, a Blu Studio J2 cellphone, and a beach chair and umbrella from IT&E. The competition will be from 5m to 6pm, with contestants providing their own grill, charcoal, ingredients, and other necessities. Short ribs will be provided by title sponsor Chun Ji Korean BBQ Restaurant.

The Beer-lympics from 8pm to 9pm will welcome up to 10 teams of four participants each that will compete in a series of obstacles or stages. Prizes will be $200 worth of festival tokens first place, $150 worth of festival tokens for second place, and $100 of festival tokens for third place. Winners in both competitions will also receive giveaways from the MVA.

“The Marianas Beer & BBQ festival will be open for an exciting six hours from 5pm to 11pm and is free and open to all ages,” said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “There will be non-alcoholic drinks available, but patrons wishing to consume alcohol must be over 21 and must purchase one of our packages. We invite those interested to purchase their packages before Saturday here at the MVA office in San Jose so they can start enjoying the festival without delay when they arrive on Saturday.”

The $25 package includes two 12 oz. servings of beer or wine; two 4 oz. samples of beer or wine; one chaser, and an official Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival collectible beer glass. The $50 package includes four 12 oz. servings of beer or wine; two 4 oz. samples of beer or wine; two chasers, an official Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival collectible beer glass, and an official Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival t-shirt.

All alcohol must be served in the official 2018 festival beer glass.

Saipan Brewing Co., Marpac, I Love Saipan, Westco, and Franken Brau have all confirmed to participate in the event, which pairs Marianas brews with island-style barbecue and other appetizers and is an annual signature event of the MVA. Slated to provide a variety of chasers for the events are Mystique Snack Bar, Ina’s Kitchen, The Hut, and Salty’s. (MVA)
