More and more homeowners on Saipan are availing of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s net metering program.
Net metering is a low-cost type of renewable energy technology that allows customers to bank their energy and use it at their convenience and then sell any excess power they produce to CUC.

During Thursday’s CUC board meeting, CUC executive director Gary P. Camacho informed CUC directors that, as of Aug. 31, 2019, CUC has connected 11 more net metering accounts.

That means the total number of net metering customers who are connected to the CUC grid stands at 391 residential, commercial, and government accounts, Camacho said.

He said their Power Division expects the net metering customer base to increase in the future as 216 customer applications are under review for grid connection.

He said the total grid connected system amount to 4.1 megawatts.

In 2014, the CUC board approved net metering for its residential customers, allowing residential customers to install solar panels in their homes and get paid for any excess power that is returned to the CUC grid.
