Promoting water safety and encouraging better water safety practices in the Marianas, acting governor David M. Apatang designated the month of May as National Water Safety Month during a short proclamation ceremony last Tuesday at the Office of the Governor on Capital Hill.
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the Division of Customs and Biosecurity, 500 Sails, the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter, and partnering departments, agencies, and service organizations joined Apatang and members of the community for the occasion.
The proclamation highlights the importance of water safety rules and practices, and urges the promotion of these regulations to hopefully prevent more water-related injuries and deaths. The proclamation also recognized the contributions made by the recreational water industry, which is represented through the National Water Safety Month Coalition and participating organizations. The coalition’s is heavily involved in efforts to develop safe swimming facilities, aquatic programs, and further educate the public on water safety.

During the proclamation signing, Apatang called on the people of the Commonwealth to acknowledge the importance of water safety. “Prioritizing safety and following proper precautions is essential, whether you are swimming, boating, or spending time at the beach. Through this, we can prevent drownings and water-related injuries,” he said.
With summertime nearing, the CNMI isn’t the only one recognizing and highlighting water safety, but many other countries will also be taking part of the observation this month.
