Mobil keeps perfect record

 Mobil retained its undefeated record in the 3rd Annual Shirley’s Coffee Shop Invitational Basketball League after beating Shirley’s, 90-82, last Sunday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

The win was third in a row for the Marvin Deocares-coached Mobil, which also reclaims the solo lead in the 10-team field, one victory ahead of DFS Galleria and defending champion Pacific Islands Club/NVM.

Mobil had a jackrabbit start and led by as much as 24 points before Shirley’s mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but still fell short to drop to a 0-3 record.

Larry Sharry led Mobil’s early attack, scoring 11 points. JP Jose and Jun Estolas chipped in five apiece to give Mobil a 29-14 advantage.

The lead ballooned to 21 at the break, 51-30, as this time Estolas teamed up with Bart Demapan in the second quarter and they combined for 16 markers. Shirley’s faced a big deficit in the first half due to its lackluster offense. Only three players for Shirley’s scored in the opening quarter and four in the second with only Kae Bernardo making more than two field goals in the second frame.

Mobil stretched the lead to 24 in the third, 73-49, with Jose coming off the bench and contributing eight and Tony Wenceslao and Marvin Rabauliman nailing five apiece.

Then in the fourth, Shirley’s tried overhauling the lead, but managed to move only within six before it ran out of time, while Mobil hung in there with Sharry, Rabauliman, and Bart Demapan hitting timely baskets.

Sharry and Demapan scored 18 points each, while Rabauliman chipped in 17. Errol Peredo top-scored for Shirley’s with 19 markers.

PIC/NVM 72, Hyatt 63

In the first game, PIC notched its second win in as many games after downing Hyatt.

The defending champions held Hyatt to nine points in the first period en route to a nine-point victory. Hyatt fell to a 1-2 slate.

Only one player broke into double figures for PIC with Angelo Fernando firing 12 points. However, 12 others made it to the scoreboard for the team’s balance offense.

In contrast, Hyatt’s scoring was pretty uneven with four posting double digits and the rest combining for 18 points. PIC’s bench accounted for 39 markers.

Hyatt had only four field goals in the first period against PIC’s seven, allowing the latter to take a 16-9 lead. PIC went on to keep the driver’s seat in the next three periods to improve to a 2-0 record.
