Miss Northern Marianas Earth holds sash-pinning
A ceremony making official the eight contestants for the upcoming 2021 Miss Northern Marianas Earth was held yesterday afternoon at the Saipan Mayor’s Office conference room. Vying for this year’s Miss Northern Marianas Earth are Sue Ann Huerbo, Macey Fujihara, Megan Hemley, Tania Borja, Fiona Crystal Rio, Stephanie Borja, Bianca Joy Zapanta, and Rain Justine Kirby.
The eight each spoke about their environmental advocacies and why.
Huerbo advocates for going green, because it will “reduce pollution and environmental toxins.” She also hopes to educate the people of the CNMI and future generations to take better care of the Earth.
Fujihara advocates for encouraging more sustainable packaging, saying she “wants to help reduce plastic waste and encourage a more eco-friendly lifestyle.”
Hemley advocates for green building practices and wants to promote eco-friendly and sustainable living.
Tania Borja advocates for assisting and encouraging the community to preserve and beautify the environment. She said she joined the pageant to “expand my knowledge about the environment and to gain an experience that will aid me in striving for a better and brighter future.”
Rio advocates for pollution education, saying she “wants to educate the community on the different types of pollution that affect our environment” and encourages collaboration “to find different ways to get rid of them.”
Stephanie Borja gave a speech on what her advocacy is and why in Chamorro.
Zapanta’s advocacy is based on waste and air pollution management, saying she wants to make the community more knowledgeable in ways of disposing trash that does not pollute the air.
Kirby hopes to spread the knowledge of environmental health and ways to practice it. She says that climate change is one of the main factors affecting the islands, and that she wants to specifically target illegal dumping.
After each contestant spoke, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang and the Miss Northern Marianas Earth event director pinned “contestant” sashes on each of the eight contestants. A photo-op followed.
The CNMI edition of the Miss Earth pageant is organized by Exquisite Production.
