The eight contestants of the first Miss Earth Northern Marianas pageant made their debut last Friday during a sash-pinning ceremony at the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

The sashes were presented to the eight young women by Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang and Saipan Mayor’s Office director of operations Joann Aquino to make official their participation in the CNMI Miss Earth pageant this June.

The contestants were Nicole Malakai, 20; Leisha Deleon Guerrero; Joanna Navarro, 23; Mary Joy Masongsong, 23; Jessme Jones, 17; Jan Zowie Cruz, 17; Pheona David; and Kat Johnson, 17.

The eight contestants will be going head to head for the title of Miss Earth Northern Marianas and the chance to represent the CNMI in the upcoming Miss Earth International pageant.

According to Apatang, this would be the first Miss Earth pageant to be held in the CNMI and he is excited about it because the pageant symbolizes something of importance to the islands, which is the environment.

“Today my role is pinning for Miss Earth candidates and this is the first one to ever happen here on Saipan and the thing is, it deals with…Earth and environment and this is what we are all about…so eventually the…candidates will be going around promoting this issue in schools,” he said.

Apatang said his office is helping to organize the event and will support the pageant logistically with its president, Diana Clayton.

Exquisite Productions Marianas LLC vice president Rosalyn Ajoste said the pageant has been in the works for over a year and they are excited that it is finally happening.

Exquisite Productions Marianas aims to make the pageant an annual competition if it turns out well this first year.

“Guam has been doing this for years and it’s about time the CNMI jumps on board too,” she said.
