MISO, NMBA move badminton tournament to next school year
The Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization and the Northern Marianas Badminton Association has decided to move the inaugural badminton tournament to next school year 2015-2016.
MISO executive director Nick Gross said the decision came after numerous activities, like the Marianas March Against Cancer were also lined up last weekend, and due to lack of interested schools participating.
The test tournament was initially set on May 2, Saturday, and MMAC finished at around 6am that day. Marianas High School also held their prom night last week.
“But we are excited to move forward with our plans to implement badminton into the high school sports calendar for the 2015-2016 school year with the season taking place from September to November,” said Gross.
Gross added that MHS, if the tournament pushed through, would have a team composed of five players each in the boys and girls divisions since 33 tried out for the squads that was going to be formed, while Saipan Southern High School have one boy and one girl.
“Let’s postpone ‘til September and maybe do an early bird tournament towards the end of the month in preparation for next school year,”
NMBA tournament coordinator Andreau Galvez agreed with Gross’ suggestion. “We can always reschedule and prepare for the next school year’s season.”
NMBA is also suggesting of holding a coaching clinic and introduction to badminton to show how the sport is played. Gross said the development course could be set on the week of Aug. 17 to 22 at the MHS Gymnasium since public school teachers report back to work. (NMBA)
