MISO boys caging, girls v’ball set next month

The Boys basketball will open on Jan. 7, while action in the girls volleyball starts the following day, Jan. 8.
A total of 12 teams will be competing in the boys basketball with defending champion MHS aiming to keep the title. The Dolphins defeated Kagman High School, 37-36, on a Mike Arciaga putback last year to reclaim the crown they last won during the 2008-2009 season. Kagman, after losing to MHS, won back-to-back (2009-2010 and 2010-2011) while Tinian High School, which only joins in the double elimination finals, ruled the league also in two straight seasons (2011-2012 and 2012-2013).
Kagman 9, MHS 9, Saipan Southern High School junior varsity,Kagman junior varsity, Grace Christian Academy, MHS junior varsity, SSHS 9, Saipan International School, Marianas Baptist Academy, and Mt. Carmel School are the other competing teams.
A triple-header will kick things off in the boys basketball with KHS 9 opening up the matches against MHS 9 at 4pm. The junior varsity teams of Saipan Southern and Kagman will play at 5:20pm, while MHS begins its title defense bid against GCA at 6:30pm.
Only a 12-man roster is allowed for the boys varsity team in basketball, while the junior varsity and 9th graders can have as much as 15 members. The boys basketball jamboree will be held on Jan. 17.
Meanwhile, 13 teams will be playing in the girls volleyball led by defending champion MHS, which defeated Grace Christian Academy in last year’s finals, 24-26, 25-20, 18-16. The varsity and junior varsity teams will have 15-member rosters.
The first four play dates in the girls volleyball, Jan. 8 to 20, will play all three sets regardless of the outcome of the first two sets, while beginning on Jan. 22 it will be the standard 2 out of 3 sets. The volleyball jamboree will be on Jan. 24.
MISO executive director Nick Gross said report cards (minimum of 2.25 GPA with no F’s), parental release forms, and current physical must be submitted by all teams not later than Jan. 6.
In related news, the girls soccer will be scheduled at a later date with the varsity and JV teams allowed to submit 18-member rosters. (Jon Perez)
