The Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance, which held a marine debris contest over the weekend among fishermen who participated in the 33rd Saipan International Fishing Tournament, has named boat captain Jesse Taitano and the crew of the fishing boat Jesus Maria as the winner of the competition.
Taitano and his crew were awarded the prize of $500 in Joeten gift certificates.
Representing the team, Jesseboy Taitano received the prize at the fishing tournament’s awards banquet.
The contest required derby participants to find at least one piece of trash, which is man-made, that they found in the ocean and collected while they were fishing. Any floating marine debris, such as plastic, were qualified. All trash collected were turned in to the MINA booth upon docking. In past derbies, the garbage consisted mostly of old nets and other old fishing equipment.
“Congratulations, Team Jesus Maria and thank you for doing your part in keeping our ocean clean,” MINA said in a statement.
It is MINA’s mission to foster conservation through community outreach to enhance and sustain the islands’ environment.
