MINA film wins 2 awards at filmfest
The Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance received word this week that My Haggan Dream has won two awards at the MY HERO Festival, an international festival highlighting stories of unsung heroes throughout the world.
In a statement yesterday, MINA said the film won for Best of Fest and the People’s Choice award.
The film, available for free to children and educators, tells the story of a young girl named Kaya, whose mysterious dream about a haggan, or sea turtle, leads her on a delightful quest to find sea turtles around her home island of Saipan.
Co-produced by Sisbro Studios and Open Boat Films, the film has been screened in 32 international film festivals, and has won a total of 10 awards.
The film won the Youth Engagement Award at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, known as the equivalent of the Oscars in the natural history filmmaking industry. The competition this year was fiercer than ever, with over 600 films competing for the top prizes.
The film also won the STEM Award at the 34th annual Chicago International Film Festival, Best Children’s Program at the BLUE Ocean Film Festival, and the Best Short Film at the International Ocean Film Festival.
MINA is proud to have been a partner in the production of this film, along with the CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources Sea Turtle Program, the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife, and the NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Regional Office. Additionally, MINA is grateful to all of those who had an opportunity to vote for this film in the People’s Choice MY HERO Festival.
The film is being distributed to schools throughout the CNMI and Micronesia for use in the classrooms as part of MINA’s outreach and education efforts conserving and protecting the islands’ precious natural resources.
