Mieko tapers off for XTERRA World

Hawaii-bound Mieko Carey will do her final preparations for the 2011 XTERRA World Championship this weekend.
“My last big training will be this Sunday,” said Carey, who is talking of the mini “Hell of the Marianas” 50K race this. “I’ve been training hard for the past months and next week after the mini Hell, I will focus on recovery, take a rest, and be ready for XTERRA World.”
The 2011 XTERRA World Championship will take place on Oct. 23 (Oct. 24 on Saipan) in Maui and the 33-year-old triathlete is leaving Saipan for Hawaii on Oct. 19.
“It is less than two weeks before the Maui race. I am getting excited,” the pro triathlete added.
In Maui, Carey hopes to surpass her 13th place finish in the women’s pro division and eclipse her time of three hours, 21 minutes, and 11 seconds. In 2009, she placed 18th and clocked in at 3:35:44. In the 2011 edition of the annual off-road race, Carey will reunite with her new coach Cody Waite.
“ He is one of the top American XTERRA athletes. I just started working with him after my trip in Japan and I felt good. I am excited to see him in Maui,” said Carey, who was then coached by Australian pro Andrew Noble and Olympians coach Col Stewart.
Carey earned another slot to XTERRA World after finishing fifth in the 2011 XTERRA Saipan Championship early this year. She and Butch Sublemente are the only two triathletes from Saipan who will compete in the new course in Maui. This year’s XTERRA World was moved from the south’s Makena Beach & Golf Resort to the north’s Kapalua Resort.
Free swim clinic
Meanwhile, before leaving for Maui, Carey will be holding a free clinic Saipan Swim Club organized through the help of Mariana Resort.
“I am so excited to share my experience with the kids. I used to coach in Japan before I came on Saipan and then I worked for SSC for a year. Swimming is my strongest point in triathlon,” Carey said.
“I would love to help develop young swimmers on Saipan. Some children have big potentials future. I want to improve their skills and teach them how to have fun in doing swimming or any other sports,” she said.
The clinic will run from 5pm to 6pm at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.
