Tourism offices of Micronesia met in Guam on Dec. 6, 2019, to reorganize the Micronesia Cruise Association, which aims to make Micronesia a globally sought out regional cruise destination.
Members of MCA are the CNMI, Guam, Republic of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Republic of Kiribati. MCA’s immediate goals are to facilitate regional collaboration in cultivating and growing market visibility, as well as encourage heritage conservation, authenticity, and differentiation of island destinations.
“The cruise industry has great growth potential in the Marianas,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Priscilla M. Iakopo, who represented the Marianas at the meeting. “The advantages of cruise ship tourism include lower infrastructure requirements and lower social and environmental impact on our small island communities. We hope to work collaboratively with the CNMI Commonwealth Ports Authority and other relevant agencies, as well as our partners across Micronesia, to grow this revenue stream for the Marianas and our region.”
The association also had a courtesy call with Guam Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero. (MVA)
