Marianas High School Varsity and Saipan Southern High School are assured of the Top 2 seeds in the playoff round of the 2019-2020 Public School System Interscholastic Girls High School Basketball League.

The Lady Dolphins are undefeated so far this season, holding a 10-0 record after notching a pair of wins last week (Dec. 10) in the final playing day in the league that is on break for nearly a month. MHS Varsity got win No. 9 after crushing Agape Christian School, 30-5, in the first game on the north court. In the second game, the Lady Dolphins also whipped Kagman High School, 20-6, to extend their winning streak and keep the lead in the regular season.

Saipan Southern, on the other hand, played only one game last week and eased past Grace Christian Academy, 23-10, for an 8-2 mark and the second place in the team standings.

The Top 2 teams, after the regular season, will be paired against lowly-ranked squads in the opener of the double-elimination playoffs. If Tinian and Rota join next month’s playoff round, nine teams will be competing and the likely No. 1 seed MHS Varsity will face the winner in the game between the No. 8 and 9 squads, while Saipan Southern will be pitted against the No. 7 team.

There is one more playing day (Jan. 7 make-up) in the regular season and pending results of the last set of matches, Agape (6-5) are behind MHS Varsity and Saipan Southern, and is followed by MHS Junior Varsity (5-5), Mt. Carmel School (5-5), GCA (2-9), and Kagman (0-10).

Agape is in third place, as it managed to get a win last week after outclassing Mt. Carmel, 19-10. MHS JV denied Agape another victory after pulling off a 14-13 upset, and the Lady Dolphins made it two in a row following a 24-14 triumph over GCA.

Meanwhile, the make-up day on Jan. 7 will feature six matches. On the north court, Saipan Southern will take on MHS Varsity and Mt. Carmel, while GCA will battle Agape. On the south end, MHS JV will face Kagman twice, while MHS Varsity will close out against Mt. Carmel.

The playoff round is tentatively set for Jan. 10 and 11 with Rota and Tinian, if they make the trip to Saipan, getting the middle seeds.
