Marianas High School Varsity was unbeaten in the double-elimination playoffs to rule the 2019-2020 Public School System Interscholastic Girls High School Basketball League.

MHS Varsity clinched the championship after downing MHS Junior Varsity in Game 1 of the finals, 19-8, last Saturday at the MHS Gymnasium. Jaime Pangelinan top-scored for MHS Varsity in its title win after scoring 8 points. Joining Pangelinan on the champion team are Desrei Camacho, Alliyah Fernandez, Katrina Costales, Katherine Magat, Jerlyn Castillo, Sedrei Camacho, Winneb Echavez, Sydney Hinds, and Kina Rangamar.

The finals victory allowed MHS Varsity to preserve its perfect record this season, as the Lady Dolphins earned a 12-0 record in the preliminary round and notched four wins in the playoffs last weekend.

MHS Varsity faced the winless Kagman High School in the first round of the playoffs last Friday and won to boost its finals bid. Up next for MHS Varsity was MHS JV, which advanced after downing Tinian, and the former prevailed anew to notch the first semis berth in the winners’ bracket.

In the semifinals, MHS Varsity dueled Saipan Southern High School, the No. 2 finisher in the preliminary with its 9-3 mark and moved to the battle for the first finals ticket after topping Grace Christian Academy and Mt. Carmel School. The Lady Dolphins posted a 23-14 victory over the Lady Rays to reach the finals first.

Saipan Southern and MHS JV dropped to the loser’s bracket with the latter eliminating Tinian to earn the right to face the Lady Rays for the second and last finals seat.

MHS JV then held Saipan Southern to 2 points in the first half of their semis duel en route to a 16-6 triumph, setting up an all-Lady Dolphins title showdown.

MHS Varsity got a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals, as it was undefeated in the playoffs. Pangelinan and company then finished off MHS JV, racing to a 6-0 lead in the first half of the 24-minute game and remaining in control in the second to cap the season with a clean record.
