MHS students lament lack of teachers

Share

I’m taking AP US History and today, my class has been added up with U.S. Government students. Some students are wasting their time taking U.S. History again. Their teacher has cancer and where is their substitute teacher? Why can’t they use the money to hire a substitute teacher? I’m pretty sure if the commissioners are able to go to conferences then they’re able to hire new teachers. These U.S. Government students haven’t had a teacher for two weeks! In two weeks, they could have learned something instead of wasting their time doing nothing. So please, PSS, use your money wisely and hire more teachers. What happened to the phrase “Students first”? Hmm.

Our school, MHS, has lost some teachers due to situations we can’t control. Don Cohen, one of our U.S. Government teachers, has fallen very ill, and is unable to teach for the rest of the school year. As a result of this, students are being transferred to other Social Studies classes, giving the teachers more students than they already have. This is a total detriment to not only the teachers but the students especially. How will we, the students, be able to get the attention we need from our teachers with a classroom filled with 40-50 students? How will we, the students, get a proper education? PSS should be giving us substitutes to ensure that the students gain the knowledge they need for the future. Why is PSS spending money on a gym (in Kobler) that we don’t even need? What happened to “Students First”?

I m writing this letter because I am not happy that there are no substitute in MHS. For Mr. Cohen’s class, they have been staying inside the class for about a week during the period because Mr. Cohen has cancer and isn’t able to teach. We the students of MHS deserve to have proper education and we don’t want to waste our time. We come to school to be educated, but how can we be educated when there are no teachers to educate us? Please give us the funding that our school needs to that we could hire substitutes.

I would like to inform you that our Public School System is out of line. Public Law 18-12 was recently passed and PSS was granted I believe 25 percent of government funding. Recently Mr. Cohen took leave for medical reasons and today his U.S. Government class was in my A.P. U.S. History class. The classroom was crammed and since they’re different subjects, we couldn’t do what we usually do. PSS got the money but where is it going? And what happened to “Students First”?
