Marianas High School interim principal Cherlyn Cabrera disclosed that some of the school’s female students have experienced sexual advances in recent days outside the campus.

In a letter to parents and guardians, Cabrera described the situation as very serious and said the offenders are still wandering the island.

“I would like to alert you of several incidents that have occurred over the past few days off our school campus. We have received reports of men making sexual advances toward several of our female students,” the principal said in a memorandum to parents and guardians last week.

According to Cabrera, two incidents occurred at the school bus stop at the Airport Road area while one incident happened in Chalan Kanoa as a student was on her way from church. Another sexual harassment was reported to the principal in Garapan while a female student was walking from a store on her way home.

The principal informed the parents and guardian that all these four incidents were reported to the Department of Public Safety and are being investigated.

Cabrera asked the cooperation of the parents and stakeholders in protecting the safety of all students.

“We ask you to please take extra precautionary measures to ensure your child’s safety and to talk to your children about safety. One suggestion is to ask your children to be with their fellow classmates when walking to and from school and to the bus stations,” she said.

Cabrera urged everyone to immediately report to police any suspicious activity, adding that both schools and community can work together to address the safety and welfare of all students.

MHS is the largest public school on island and is home to over a thousand students every year.

This week, Cabrera reported that classes will be only up to Wednesday as the PSS statewide professional development is scheduled for Thursday while Friday is CNMI Covenant Day. Cabrera lauded the parents continued partnership with the school in striving toward high student achievement and excellence for all students.
