MHS Lady Dolphins' Rachel Abram gladly provides service with a smile from the post in Thursday's MISO girls basketball matchup against SSHS Lady Manta Rays held at the MHS Gym. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) The Marianas High School Lady Dolphins kicked off its season with an 81-27 demolition job of the Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays as the 2011 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls basketball season continued Thursday at the MHS Gymnasium.

The defending champions had five returning players on its roster, and the one-sided victory makes it apparent that the Lady Dolphins have hit the ground running this year.

Glory Williams paced MHS with seven points in the opening 10 minutes as the Lady Dolphins shot out to an early 29-7 lead.

MHS kept applying pressure in the second period and shut out Lady Rays offensively.

The Lady Dolphins amassed a mammoth 54-7 lead at halftime.

SSHS struggled with ball protection and was out-hustled for rebounds under the basket. Meanwhile on the other end, MHS’ Jeraldine Castillo led the charge with nine points in the second quarter.

MHS continued to pass the ball around at will in the third quarter, and it was Rachel Abrams’ turn to carry the torch; she delivered a 3-pointer for seven points in the period.

MHS was way out in front, 72-11, heading into the last quarter.

MHS called off the dogs in the fourth period, enabling SSHS’ Roxanne Duenas to sink a couple of treys for 12 points in the final minutes.

Notably, despite being overwhelmed by a veteran MHS team, the Lady Rays never lost their spirit and played all out until the buzzer.

Castillo and Abrams led MHS with 15 points apiece, while Duenas managed 14 on the short end for SSHS.

Details of the junior varsity matchup will be released on Monday.

MHS 81 – Castillo 15, Abrams 15, Williams 12, Alegre 10, Gozon 9, Rangamar 6, Mendoza 4, Johnson 4, Badalles 2, Francisco 2.

SSHS 27 – Duenas 14, Joseph 9, Malasarte 2.

Scoring by quarters: 29-7, 54-0, 72-11, 81-27.
