MHS, Kagman slug it out

Marianas High School and Kagman High School got in each other’s way during the kickoff of the Public School System Interscholastic Outrigger Canoe Competition last Saturday at Kilili Beach.
In the girls 100m’s first race, MHS was the top finisher after checking in at 6:42.1, while Kagman placed second at 7:43.6, and Saipan Southern High Schools was ranked third (10:40.3). In the same dis-tance, but in the boys division, the Ayuyus got the better of the Dolphins with the former posting 6:23.2 against the latter’s 6:38.7. The Manta Rays were at distant third after recording 7:04.9. For the mixed event, MHS regained the top spot after clocking in at 6:30.8 versus the 6:59.0 and 8:23.5 of Kagman and Saipan Southern.
In the second race of the same course, MHS went on to sweep the three divisions after posting 6:36.54, 6:35.3, and 6:27.3 in the girls, boys, and mixed events, respectively. Kagman was second in the girls and mixed, while Southern was the runner-up in the boys.
Then in the first 500m race, it was the Ayuyus’ turn to top all three categories with their girls crew tim-ing in at 3:37.7, the boys registering 2:56.0, and the mixed clocking in at 3:13.9.
For the same distance, in the second race, MHS narrowly won over Kagman in the girls division with the Lady Dolphins logging 3:30.0 against the Lady Ayuyus’ 3:31.9. In the boys event, Kagman finished ahead at 2:59.6, while Southern (3:06.8) placed second and MHS (3:10.5) settled for third. The Dolphins then redeemed themselves in the mixed race after recording 3:08.3, about three seconds ahead of Kagman (3:11.1). Southern posted 3:33.7.
After last Saturday’s first leg, the Northern Marianas National Paddle Sports Fed-eration-sanctioned high school canoe competition will resume this Saturday and will also feature sprint events, while the long distance course will be contested on May 18. Then on May 25, the participating schools will go for all the marbles as they compete in the double-point sprint championships.
