MHS’ Hartig receives NSDA honor
Marianas High School’s Shea Hartig was honored as a four-year qualifier during this year’s National Speech and Debate Association national competition.
During the opening ceremony of the annual NSDA nationals that was held virtually this year, Team CNMI’s Hartig was honored for competing in a qualifier event for the NSDA nationals every year of her high school career.
According to Harold Easton, Speech and Debate Association regional coordinator, only a small percentage of the thousands of student participants achieve this four-year honor.
This year, Hartig participated in the Oral Oratory Qualifier Event and finished four solid rounds, along with Jonathan Wolf who joined in the Humorous Interpretation, and James Keaton who joined in the U.S. Extemporaneous Speech where he finished two rounds.
Hartig also broke into the supplemental event where she entered and competed among the top 60 in the Prepared Prompt Speech event.
Aside from Hartig, Team CNMI’s Na Lee “Christy” Lee for Prose Reading, Victoria Santos for Story Telling, Dane Hodges for Storytelling, and Jonathan Wolf for Prose Reading all broke into the round of the top 60. This put them ahead of between 82 to 223 competitors nationwide.
Maria Elizabeth Bonto for Prepared Prompt Speech, James Keaton for Prepared Commentary, Jill Mallari for Expository Speech, Victoria Santos for Expository Speech, and Amy Soliman for Poetry Reading also almost made the break.
Easton said Team CNMI placed well among the 5,316 entrants who competed in this virtual tournament.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NSDA National Competition shifted to a virtual platform.
The CNMI Team had representatives from Grace Christian Academy, Marianas High School, and Mount Carmel School.
