The Marianas High School Glee Club won gold at the annual Tumon Bay Music Festival in Guam last week.

Led by director Clarisse C. Torio, the MHS Glee Club bested 12 schools and won gold at the TBMF’s choral festival that took place from Feb. 28 to March 1, 2019.

The club consists of 21 members, 13 of whom are girls and eight are boys.

“We had a variety of songs in our repertoire,” Torio told Saipan Tribune. The group performed Rise Up by Andra Day as arranged by alumni Miguel Manual and Leonard Manuel, Ave Maria composed by Franz Biebl, Hallelujah as arranged by popular acapella group Pentatonix, and One Short Day from the Broadway musical Wicked with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and arranged by former director Paul Dujua.

“Finding out that we won gold in the choral festival was the most amazing feeling ever,” Torio said, comparing it to a weight being lifted off their shoulders.

“When I went up…to receive our plaque, I couldn’t help but tear up a bit,” she said.

MHS principal Cherlyn Cabrera said: “We are so proud of our students and it shows their hard work. They really developed their talent and we are just so thankful for them.”

“For some of the students, [participating and winning in the TBMF] was really a life-changing experience,” she said.
