The Marianas High School Dolphins toppled the Knights of Mount Carmel School, 82-44, in Wednesday’s Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization varsity pairing held at the MHS Gymnasium.
With its second win in as many games, the unbeaten Dolphins are officially on a streak, while MCS suffered its second straight loss this week.
Back on Monday, the Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays stung the Knights, 69-39.
On Wednesday, MHS built an early 15-10 edge in the opening 10 minutes thanks largely to Erick Dela Rosa’s eight points.
It remained close until the last five minutes of the first half when MHS surged ahead, 39-19.
The Dolphins’ transition offense came alive late in the second quarter as John Darag and Ezra Caro delivered eight points apiece in the charge.
MCS’ Reynald Calbatica and Thomas Kautz combined for 15 points in the first half.
MHS kept the pressure on the Knights after the pause and went on to double them up, 61-30, heading into the final period.
Darag added eight more markers in the third quarter and received mixed support from his teammates.
Darag then delivered 10 points in garbage time as the Dolphins cruised to the easy win.
Darag finished with 26 points to lead all scorers, while MCS’ Calbatica managed 16 on the short end.
Back on Monday, SSHS shot ahead, 18-3, right out of the gate. The Manta Rays’ Christian Mizer carried the torch with eight pints in the opening period.
SSHS never looked back and amassed a daunting 39-7 margin at the break. Seven different players put a hand on offense and its defense did a great job stifling the Knights on the other end.
MCS would not recover from the early meltdown and the count shifted to 56-15 with 10 minutes to go.
Jimmy Tudela racked up eight points for SSHS in the third quarter.
He led the Dolphins with 14 total points, while MCS’ Calbatica led all scorers with 16.
SSHS pulled its starters early in the fourth quarter, but SSHS’ bench managed to trade baskets with the Knights for the remainder of the contest.
The season continues today at 4pm with a junior pairing between Grace Christian Academy and SSHS followed by the varsity matchup at the MHS Gym.
