Vincent L. Muna, a 10th grader with the Marianas High Hospitality & Tourism class wins a gift certificate from the Marianas Tourism Education Council on April 4, 2012, for correctly identifying the approximate number of visitors to the Northern Marianas last year and the islands' largest tourism market. (MVA) The Marianas High School’s Hospitality & Tourism Class welcomed the Marianas Tourism Education Council and Marianas Visitors Authority this week for a classroom dialogue on tourism.

MTEC chair Vicky Benavente led presentations to two classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 3 and 4, where MTEC talked with the students on the industry, including why visitors travel to the Northern Marianas and what more can be done-individually and organizationally-to improve the visitor experience.

“These kids are sharp. They understand the importance of the industry,” said Benavente. “We hope our presentation will spark new awareness and new ideas for them this year, both in and outside the classroom.”

Teacher Tyce Mister thanked MTEC for approaching the class about making the presentation.

“It reaffirmed topics we have brought up in class and brought up new ideas, too,” said Mister. “All good stuff!”

MTEC will continue its educational presentations to junior and senior high schools for the rest of the semester. The council is a non-profit organization aimed at educating the public on the importance of the tourism industry. Membership is open to all interested individuals. (MVA)
