The defending boys volleyball champions Marianas High School Dolphins swept the regular season of the NMIVA-Public School System Boys High School Volleyball League 2022-2023.
They brought the Grace Christian Academy Eagles to their knees in a hotly contested game in the last regular game day of the season last Thursday at the MHS Gymnasium.
The MHS 1 team had dominated all season and it just made sense for them to cruise to an easy victory, but the Eagles were determined to prove their mettle and came out fighting in two tight sets, 21-18, 22-20.
The game was back and forth for the whole duration, with neither team able to pull away, but in the end the Dolphins’ experience and skill proved too much for the Eagles and took the last W for an unbeaten season heading into the championship rounds.
The Dolphins’ lineup of Mokyang Joseph Kim, Jerome Manzon, William Arriola, Juruel Magtalas, Dylan Mister, and John Justo spiked, blocked, and attacked the Eagles’ roster of Seth Balakrishna, Ryan Daproza, Jasper Hall, Noah Lee, Miles Linden, Kyle San Hyun Moon, Akira Ota, Jack Raho, Tristan Raho, Julian Taitano, Jiahao Yang, Sui Yi, and Jiahang Wu.
In other games that day, Agape Christian School 1 stole the W away from No. 2 seed Saipan International School in three nail-biting sets, 18-21, 21-18, 18-16; Saipan Southern High School 1 defeated Kagman High School, 21-17, 21-18; MHS 2 slipped past MHS 3 13-21, 21-18, 15-6; and SIS 2 notched a win against ACS 2, 21-10, 21-12.
Third in the standings after MHS 1 and SIS 1 are ACS 1 and GCA with five wins and three losses each; SSHS 1 has an even four wins and four losses; Tinian High School has four wins and three losses; Mount Carmel School 1 has two wins and six losses; KHS is 1-7; and Dr. Rita H. Inos High School has no wins and seven losses.
The double-elimination tournament is slated to begin this Thursday, April 27, and will last until Saturday, April 29.
