MGA to hold Festpac fundraiser

The Marianas Golf Association will be holding a fundraising golf tournament for the benefit of the CNMI delegation to the 12th Festival of Pacific Arts in Guam this May. The golf fundraiser is set on April 16 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

MGA member James Benavente is encouraging all golfers to support the tournament as proceeds will help fund the CNMI delegation’s trip to the quadrennial festival. Details of the fundraiser will be finalized in today’s meeting of the golf committee.

The Festival of Pacific Arts is set from May 22 to June 4 at the Paseo de Susana Park in Hagatna. More than 2,500 performers, artists, and other cultural practitioners are expected to arrive aside from tourists and visitors from Asia.

American Samoa, Australia, the Cook Islands, Easter Island, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, the State of Hawaii, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Pitcairn Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna are the Pacific Island countries and territories expected to join the festival.

In related golf news, Joey Dela Cruz bested 30 other MGA members to win the club’s January Ace of the Month held at Laolao Bay Golf & Resort’s east course. He shot rounds of 39 and 36 for a gross score of 75, but ended with a 68 net after his 7 handicap.

Newly elected MGA handicap director Jay Muna finished with a 78 (39 and 40) and his 8 handicap earned him a 71. He was also the 2015 Ace of Aces champion after shooting a pair of 71s (142). Former MGA president J.J. Atalig was third with a 76 (39, 37) and the 3-handicapper ended up with a net 73.

Closest to the pin winners were new club president Dung Tenorio at No. 4, vice president Mike Sablan at No. 6, Ron Benavente at No. 11, and Tony Guerrero at No. 15.

Aaron Benavente (secretary), Shine Tenorio (treasurer), and Calvin Yamagishi (tournament director) are the other new MGA officers.
