The 74-year-old businessman shot a net 65 at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo last June 17 to take home the top purse of $150. June’s best net score was built around a 40 in the front nine and 42 in the back nine, which before Mendoza’s 17 handicap was calculated, gave him a gross score of 82.
Fil-Taga president Tony Cabrera finished second to Mendoza for the June Ace. The 22-handicapper came away with a net score 70 after a 92 gross score. He went 45-47 in the first and final nine holes and won $70 for his troubles.
Completing the Top 3 for the month was Hak Chon Bae, who fired a net 71 built around a 44 and 42 in the front and back nines that gave him a gross of 86. Bae, who won $60, has a handicap of 17.
Bae actually tied Ruben Avendano for the month’s third-best net, but edged the latter in a scorecard tiebreak. Avendano, a 19-handicapper, swung a gross of 90 on the strength of a 43 in the front nine and a 47 in the back nine. He got $50.
Henry Bautista rounded out the Top 5 for the June tourney after scoring a 72 net and was $40 richer. The 13-handicapper had a gross of 85 following halves of 42 and 43. He beat Ed Varias (90 gross, 44-46) for fifth place on another scorecard tiebreaker.
Varias (Coral Ocean Point Golf Resort certificate), Mike Cruz (COP certificate), Dan Ganacias (Kingfisher Golf Links certificate), and Jess Yumul (Kingfisher Golf Links certificate) were given in-kind prizes for also finishing in the Top 9.
With the win in the June Ace, Mendoza joins Bautista (January), Dan Ganacias (February), Eli Buenaventura (March), Cabrera (April), and William Retardo (May) for the yearend FilTaga Ace Tournament.
In the closest to the pin competition, Mendoza was without peer in hole No. 15, Cruz beat all comers in hole No. 12, and Retardo out-clubbed everyone in hole No. 6.
