Mount Carmel School promoted a total of 38 8th grade students to high school last Saturday at the Mount Carmel Cathedral in Susupe, with words to encourage them to make a difference as they transition to a higher grade in their education.

The valedictorian of the graduating class, Mikee Mame Mendoza, told Saipan Tribune that although she expects more challenges upon leveling up to high school, she will strive to stay responsible and have fun while doing so.

Besides being the class valedictorian, Mendoza also received the Principal’s Award.

The Citizenship Award went to Penelope Sablan, while the Leadership Award was presented to Brandee Hunter.

Katherine Avendano Woodruff was named salutatorian of the graduating class.

According to Mount Carmel School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero, there are two kinds of people: those who make a difference and those that make excuses.

“I have found that far too many people make excuses, but not a lot of people make a difference, so ask yourself, will you make a difference, or will you make excuses?” said Deleon Guerrero.

He encouraged the graduating class to take personal responsibility (owning up to your mistakes and not making excuses), to fail forward (learn from one’s mistakes and move forward), and to be different.

Deleon Guerrero urged the class to continue to grow into the better versions of themselves and to stray from following the crowd.

“Be your own unique selves, stop following the crowd,” he said.
