The Commonwealth Ports Authority has reappointed Joseph T. Mendiola as Tinian airport and seaport chief.

CPA executive director MaryAnn Lizama confirmed this yesterday, saying that Mendiola was the sole applicant for the position. She said a new contract is now being routed for Mendiola’s new term.

“There was only one applicant for the Tinian ports manager. The current Tinian ports manager was the only one who applied and the board of directors advised me to proceed with the contract of Mr. Mendiola for a year,” Lizama said yesterday.

Mendiola confirmed yesterday his upcoming new term at CPA. Elated by this development, he promised to continue work on the progress of both airport and seaport on the island.

It was in March this year when CPA board voted to announce the Tinian ports manager position despite the admission of members that they were satisfied with Mendiola’s performance.

Pursuant to that March decision, Mendiola was issued a 45-day notice to vacate the position. In the board’s decision to open the post, they said that Mendiola is allowed to re-apply.

That CPA board decision was made at a time when Mendiola was considering running for the mayoralty position for Tinian. In May, Mendiola announced his decision to back out from the mayoralty race and then reapplied at CPA.

Mendiola was first hired in October 2010 to replace former ports manager Ike Perez, whose then contract was also terminated by the board.

Mendiola is among the top three managers of CPA, along with Ed Mendiola as Saipan airport manager and Martin Mendiola for Rota.

Mendiola’s last contract stipulated a $50,000 annual salary.
